"ADOPT A VILLAGE- KIWATULE" PROJECT
“Kiwatule, Adopt-a-village” is a two-year community development initiative, which seeks to address capacity gaps in the areas of health, water, literacy, sanitation, economic and community development in Kiwatule village as a way of improving the livelihoods of its residents on a sustainable basis.
A Global Grant application has already been logged, in partnership with the RC Maryland, Ikeja (Nigeria): Adopt-A-Village Kiwatule GG1412412 ($43,900), and TRF approval has been gotten. As such, the next TRF contributions by members of RCK & RCMI will be towards the implementation of this Project over the next few months.
Kiwatule is a peri-urban community on the outskirts of Kampala City situated on the border of Kampala and Wakiso Districts in Nakawa Division. Though Kiwatule is a rapidly growing up market residential suburb, the middle class residents in the community are recent settlers. The majority of the native residents, however, are still poor peasants who are largely squatters (bibanja holders). The main source of livelihood for the residents of Kiwatule is subsistence farming.
A needs assessment was done in November 2010, to identify the actual needs of the community and suggestions on how these could be addressed. The needs assessment involved interaction with the RCC, local community leaders, leaders in Primary and Secondary Schools and Church leaders.
This project will seek to provide safe alternative sources of water and improve access to these water sources by construction of additional water standpipes. The project will also reduce the incidence of malaria through provision of insecticide treated mosquito nets, thereby reducing the child and maternal deaths as a result of malaria. The project will also aim at improving the sanitation of the village through the construction of community pit latrines and sensitisation of the populace on the importance of hygiene.
In pursuit of increased literacy and reduction of school dropout levels, the project will equip St. Mbaga Primary School, Kiwatule with furniture, books and other scholastic materials. The project will also support school girls to ensure their continued attendance of class throughout the year.
